My Music Video Pitch

This was the song I chose for my music video pitch, this is a very recent song only released on the weekend beginning on the 18th of September. I wanted to do a narrative and performance based video. It would also have a intro with no music of the day beginning. The song would continue with performance and narrative but would mainly go into performance towards the end. This would be also a different approach to a music video as it is a very slow based song and it would be different to many fast based videos currently being released in the music video market and would stand out from our peers.

A second option by Roy Woods which is slightly slower but could be used in a more of a narrative context.

A final option is by Louis Mattrs a new upcoming artist most known for appearances with Chase and Status this is a song that could be used as a narrative/performance video

Lip Sync 2

After being told that our first lip sync task was not serious enough for performance due to certain props which can be seen in our first lip sync task. Me and Connor decided to re-do this task as Connor had now learnt more of the lyrics. Whilst we was filming this Archie was preparing more material for C.DOT. Here is our final lip sync task.

Lip Sync Task

Connor is our only performer as there is only one artist singing the song. It will be mainly performance with some narrative. He is still learning the lyrics so we attached the lyrics to the tripod which was attached to the camera. He used props to make it not as serious as the artist doesn't take himself to seriously. Especially this is only a practice so we wanted to make it interesting and entertaining for any viewers.

Music Video Directors

Here are a wide range of music video directors below I have found out one more about the most famous ones.

Spike Jonze

is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor, whose work includes music videos, commercials, film and television.

Jonze is well known for his music video collaborations with Fatboy Slim, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Björk and Kanye West. He was a co-creator and executive producer of MTV's Jackass.[1] He is currently the creative director of Vice Media, Inc..

Weapon of Choice - Fatboy Slim
This video got a Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video
What's Up, Fatlip? - Fatlip
Flashing Lights - Kanye West
Co-directed with West
Otis - Jay-Z & Kanye West
Afterlife - Arcade Fire
This video was directed live for the YouTube Awards
Dope - Lady Gaga
This video was directed live for the YouTube Awards
Only One - Kanye West feat. Paul McCartney

Hype Williams

is an American film director, film producer, screenwriter, and music video director.
Williams first displayed his work by tagging local billboards, storefronts, and playgrounds using HYPE as his graffiti tag. "That's probably what stimulated my interests in color," he says. "I wanted to be Basquiat or Keith Haring of the streets."
A signature style used by Williams throughout the vast majority of his videos was the Fisheye lens which distorted the camera view around the central focus. This was used in Gimme Some More by Busta Rhymes and The Rain by Missy Elliott; however, it was dropped by 2003, when he experienced his lowest level of production activity since the beginning of his career as a music video director.

Another signature style involves placing shots in regular widescreen ratio, while a second shot is split and placed in the upper and lower bars. Videos that use this style include "Diamonds on My Neck" by Smitty, So Sick by Ne-Yo and Snap Yo Fingers by Lil Jon. In addition to this, he frequently utilizes aerial and tracking shots which often move backwards or forwards, some techniques which can often be seen in "Rock the Boat" by Aaliyah and "She's a Bitch" by Missy ElliottIt is a method often used by Hype which allows his videos to be dynamic, multi-dimensional and atmospheric as opposed to having static camera angles. Further style traits include the use of slow motion action, deep focus, and smooth cutting.

Awards Williams has received for his video work are shown below
Billboard Music Video Award for Best Director of the Year (1996),
The Jackson Limo Award for Best Rap Video of the Year (1996) for Busta Rhymes
The NAACP Image Award (1997)
MTV Video Music Award in the Best Rap Video (1998)
The BET Award for Best Director (2006) for Kanye West's song Gold Digger

Michel Gondry

is a French film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is noted for his inventive visual style and distinctive manipulation of mise en scène.
He is well known for his music video collaborations with The Chemical Brothers, Björk and The White Stripes.

Availability Timetable

oday we created a Availability Timetable at which this is based on our timetables at school at which we can use our free periods to help eachother and this timetable lets us know what times people are free. As well as this we have set up a group chat on iMessage so that we can constantly keep in touch with eachother and share any ideas that we have.

Film Pitches

Reflections on other film pitches:

Mac Miller Ft Miguel - Weekend this was my Music Video pitch at which he wanted a street style music video heavily based around a performance based music video. It would be a Hybrid music video with concept based music video. The concepts would of been rather abstract which doesn't have to relate to the lyrics. I personally did not like this song as i felt this song lacked pace at which i felt wouldn't allow many shot changes. I also felt this song would be better with a narrative at which i feel we could not fulfill. Therefore collectively we decided that this would not be the song at which we choose to be our music video towards.

Mac Miller - Nikes on my feet. This is the song which Connor chose to pitch to us. Connor wanted a music video at which was a hybrid, with performance and concept based music video. He wanted to be the lead in this music video. The song had lots of pace however the lyrics were not to hard to learn and to lip sync to therefore we felt as though this could be really effective. I personally thought that the chorus could be really effective although it is simplistic in the sense of the lyrics, I feel as though we can make use of the pace and the style of the music together. This song is mainly based around Performance. Although this Song has a Music video he is not a hugely well known artist therefore we are allowed to use this song for our own Music Video. As a Group we instantly decided that this was the song for us.

Further Research 2 - Editing Skills

After researching videos using cross media convergence Connor remembered an amazing effect in 'The Game' - Dreams. This features famous producer Dr. Dre holding up the The Game's album cover which he then moves from. This happens at 1 minute and 5 seconds and is an amazing example of advertising which we thought we would love to do in my music video. See the video below and the album cover under it.

Further Research - Editing Skills

Today Connor did some further research after our film pitch to our fellow peers we looked up some effects which we could use. Connor liked the idea of an effect which has drawing on frames to create a live picture on a moving video. This can be seen in Justin Bieber's 'Where R U Now' video. This effect was created by allowing members of the public to draw on acetate which are then scanned on to a specific frame on the film.

This affect we thought would act well for a little section in our performance although we feel this would be very time consuming. We then decided that we could have this as a slight introduction for the first 4 seconds. Connor wanted to practise before we put it into our music Video straight away.

Cross Media Convergence

Synergy

The Weeknd has used his album theme throughout their music, music video's and merchandise. The Weeknd's style is a very slow R&B movement which you can almost tell just from the album cover below by the colours and the image below.

In the music video they then carry this theme on into the album using black and white throughout the whole of the video and including women which is shown above also in the album cover. Using the male gaze which is very important usually within a R&B video. Synergy occurs with the album as they follow the style throughout onto his music video.

Here is more merchandise and advertisement as above you see an iPhone/iPod case which is used to promote the new album Trilogy but still keeps on with the style that is used for the album this is a constant reminder of the album to fans and possible future fans once the album has ben released as this is his first major commercial breakthrough album. Below also is another advertisement which was very well posted around the time of release of the album.

Audience

Self interview on how I consume and listen to music

How do you consume music?
The music that has been released I will listen to on Spotify anything that hasn't I will listen to on YouTube

When? do you have a daily music routine? Is some music more suitable at a certain time of day than another?

I would usually listen to music at home rarely when I am out of the house on a general day.

Where? clubs, bedroom, gigs, car?
Usually listen to music the most when I am getting ready either in the morning or before going out.

Who with? do you share your music or is it an individual experience?
Usually listen to music as an individual experience however before going out we will listen to music in a group.

Why? What are the pleasures associated with music consumption? What does it offer the audience and what needs does it gratify?

Depending on the genre and the current mood I am in the pleasuring in the music and your mood go very well together. This is usually involved with the different pace of the song. Different songs also bring our different moods.

Prelim Evaluation

1)Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?

I worked with Connor and archie and we worked closely together although we had a short amount of time to complete this prelim task. We also had a variety of days where we were helping elsewhere around the school as this was so late in the year there was many events which were just finishing. Between us divided the task so that each of us was given the right amount of work. At first however us as a group and the help of our teacher we all struggled to pick a song, this was then determined by a random selection at which we got Coolio ‘Gangsters Paradise’

2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?

The prelim task had to be around 1 minute long and we had to react in act the songs music video. As we had little time we had little preparation together as a group we had to act quickly and decisively. After watching the video we created a props and locations list as we needed to film as quickly as possible. We also created a small storyboard at which lacked detail as we had to rush this in order to film our task in the time limit.

3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?

Our editing skills and performance didn’t replicate to the music video as much as we would have liked. The music video itself offered lots of theories. Carol Vernallis and Andrew Goodwin’s theories have been applied to this music video by editing in a similar way aswell as there was a relationship between the genre related style with the iconography.

4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?

The technology we used was Adobe Premiere for editing and we used a green screen effect aswell as other effects on the system. We also used a camera to film our shots. The green screen also needed a variety of lights to make sure that we did not have a shadow, however this was something we must work on in our real task as there is a series of shadows in our prelim task.

5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?

We had to take in consideration when people were available as I was involved in welcoming year 5 and year 6 students to the school. We also had to consider the amount of time at which we had to plan, film and edit the music video. The editing was rushed as we had only one lesson to edit this however we managed to get it in on time. Connor also became ill at which we then had to change the lead role and Archie stepped in to perform. We also wanted to make sure that everyone did a bit of everything so we made sure that all of us edited a section, filmed a section and performed in a section. This would then for the real music video make us better in all areas.

6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?

Our music video overall was not successful the final video was poor. Although I feel this was not due to our group, at which I enjoyed working with Connor and Archie. It was down to a short time limit and we had people missing on key dates where we was supposed to film. This lead to a really short time to edit the video and as you can see from the video, there was some out of sync lip syncing. In the future I would make sure we have planned better before filming and make sure that we create a timetable for when people are free in my group. Planning I feel is essential otherwise you don’t know what you have to do or need to do I feel decisions which are planned are better. Although in the future I would give us more time. Other people said that for the short time that it was edited it was quite similar to the music video itself.

7) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?

It is a different experience to filming an opening to a film as i watch more films and therefore I know more about them. In contrast I don’t usually watch music videos as I don’t really find them interesting.
